If you're a farmer or industry professional searching for a detailed rock picker comparison, then this article has you covered.

So, where do we sit on the front mounted vs tow behind rock picker debate? Here are the advantages and considerations of typical rock pickers to help you make an informed decision that meets your goals for trouble-free operation.

The Necessity of Rock Picking: A costly Challenge

Rock picking has always been an essential task for broadacre crop farmers, and has become increasingly important in recent years with the evolution of larger and more expensive header fronts as well as more recent trends like Deep Ripping. Damages caused by rocks during harvest can be a substantial cost to any farming business. In addition to losses due to downtime of your header, repair costs to repair machines in some cases can add up to $60,000. In addition, the manual labour costs associated with seasonal rock removal (hiring casual workers to pick rocks and stones from a pasture or farm), can add up to $15,000 to $20,000 per season.

In response to these challenges, modern rock-picking machines have emerged as a cost-effective solution to remove unwanted rocks from dirt. These machines allow farmers to reduce the financial burden of seasonal wages associated with picking rocks, streamline operations, and minimise the risk of machinery damage.

This shift to rock-picking machines is now seen as creating an industry standard, enhances overall efficiency and contributes to the financial sustainability of small-scale and large-scale farming businesses. In addition, a rock-picking machine meets the urgent need for efficiency in modern farming and highlight a proactive approach to addressing longstanding challenges.

Typical Rock Pickers - How Does a Rock Picker Work?

Typical rock pickers generally have a ground engagement system, such as a rotating reel or conveyer belt, that agitates the dirt, digging, and dislodging rocks and stones. The separated rock pile is collected in a bucket or a hopper, transported to a storage area or transporting vehicle, and then dumped for disposal. Adjustable settings allow the operator to optimise the rock picker’s performance for different soil or dirt conditions.

Front Mounted Rock Pickers

A front mounted rock picker is generally attached to the front of a tractor, skid steer, telehandler, or wheel loader and is used to pick up unwanted rocks and stones from the field or ground, leaving a smoother surface for cropping activities.

The basic design of a front mounted rock picker, such as Himac’s Telehandler Rock Picker, includes a series of rotating tines or paddles that scoop up small to large rocks as the tractor, skid steer, telehandler or loader equipment is driven over the field. These rocks and stones are then collected in a sieve style bucket for later relocation or disposal. Front mounted rock pickers are highly useful in areas where rocks can hinder farming activities, as they help prepare the dirt or soil for cropping.

Using front mounted rock pickers can save farmers time, money and effort compared to manual rock removal. It is common in areas where fields have significant rocks on the soil that could otherwise interfere with planting and harvesting machinery.

Front mounted rock pickers offer several advantages and some drawbacks.

Here are some common pros and cons associated with these machine implements:

Tow Behind Rock Pickers

A tow behind rock picker is another type of farming equipment used to clear fields of rocks and stones, but it differs in its configuration and the way it is attached to a tractor. Unlike front mounted rock pickers mounted on the front of a tractor, tow behind rock pickers are pulled behind a tractor.
Here are some key features and characteristics of tow-behind rock pickers:

Hitching: Tow behind rock pickers generally have a hitch that attaches to the frame of the three-point hitch of a tractor. This enables the weight of the equipment to be towed behind the tractor as it moves through the field.

Collecting Mechanism: Like front mounted rock pickers, tow behind models use a collecting mechanism to pull rocks, roots and debris from the field. This mechanism is often a series of rotating paddles or tines that scoop up the rocks from the soil and deposit them into a hopper box or bucket.

Adjustability: Many tow behind rock pickers are adjustable, allowing farmers to set the height and depth of the picking mechanism to accommodate varying sizes of rocks and varying field conditions on which they pull their equipment.

Dumping Mechanism: Once the hopper box or bucket is filled with rocks, most tow behind rock pickers have a dumping mechanism to release and dump the collected rocks at a desired location.

Width and Capacity: The width of tow behind rock pickers varies, and farmers can choose a model that suits the width of their fields and the size of their tractors.

Additionally, the weight and capacity of the bucket, rake or hopper varies among
different models. Tow behind rock pickers offer particular advantages and disadvantages, depending on the farmer's needs and the land's characteristics.

Here are some common pros and cons associated with tow behind rock pickers:

What Is the Best Rock Picker to Collect Rock Piles?

Farmers should carefully consider their specific needs, the size and layout of their fields, rock size, and the capabilities of their machinery when deciding between a front mounted or a tow behind rock picker. Each type of rock picker has advantages and disadvantages, and the choice depends on efficiency, manoeuvrability, and long-term cost-effectiveness of the rock picker.

For more information on our exceptional products, visit our website. In hard ground, a pilot hole is required which means they will need to dig a hole regardless, reducing the value proposition of the post driver.

While the post driver is capable of ramming posts with flat ends in softer soil conditions, we recommended using pointed posts to maximise efficiency during installation.

It is worth noting that soft or old wooden posts can splinter when using a post driver and it is ideal to use new wooden or steel posts measuring under 200 millimetres in diameter.

In summary, considering that post drivers prevent the need to dig the post holes, they save you a significant amount of time if applied in the correct soil conditions. They are also fuel-efficient, demand less manual labour, and do not necessitate any extra tools for post-placement.

Post Hole Digger

Post hole diggers require soil compaction after each post is inserted into a hole, resulting in additional time and labour required. This attachment has a vast range of uses including shed footings and larger strainer posts, it also comes with an optional concrete mixer bowl.

Post hole diggers excel not only in post-installation but can also extend their utility by utilising suitable attachments and an auger to dig holes for planting trees, shrubs, and more.

It can be used in much harsher and harder soil conditions than a post driver can, as well as providing the ability to be used in conjunction with all post types. This makes the post hole digger the more versatile attachment of the two as it allows fence post installation in all soil types.

While operating a post hole digger, the tractor needs to run at a higher engine speed, resulting in increased fuel consumption compared to a post driver. Post hole diggers also involve the use of additional specialised hand tools.

Choosing the right model for your needs

Elevating your projects with premier attachments!

You can trust Himac to not only provide quality attachments but also the best after-sales service!

We have a dedicated after-sales team to look after any issues that may arise.

Instead of making you fill out countless numbers of warranty forms and waiting days, if not weeks, before knowing if you qualify for warranty or not, our team will have a solution for you the same day so you know exactly how and when the issue will be resolved. The strength of its impact will be dependent upon how powerful the phenomenon is and whereabouts it forms in the Pacific.

Due to the forecasted reduced rainfall and hotter-than-average temperatures, the risk of a significant bushfire danger season is much higher after an El Nino year.

These factors make it essential for communities, particularly in fire-prone regions, to be prepared and vigilant during El Nino events, as they often correspond with heightened bushfire risks.

It has been warned that communities prepare for what may be the most prolific bushfire season since the 2019-2020 black summer fires.

How to reduce fire danger and bushfire risks?

As mentioned previously, this weather phenomenon known for its warmer and drier conditions can be lethal. Although, there are things you can put in place to reduce the severity of the impact of El Niño conditions.

Here are a number of ways you can prepare for El Niño's impact:

Create a defensible space - reduce the chances of fire spreading to your property by clearing vegetation which creates a buffer zone around your home, land or structures.

Maintain lawns and vegetation - regularly trim branches, remove different dead vegetation types to prevent them from becoming fuel for fires, and keep grass in large areas well-maintained and watered.

Stock up on adequate firefighting equipment - maintain a well-equipped firefighting kit, including hoses, water pumps, shovels and buckets for immediate use in case of a fire.

Install firebreaks and spark arresters - create firebreaks that can slow down or stop the spread of a fire. Use spark arresters on chimneys and stovepipes to prevent sparks from escaping and igniting nearby vegetation.

Develop an emergency plan - develop a comprehensive fire evacuation plan and ensure everyone living on the property is aware of it, as well as prepare an emergency kit with essential supplies, a first aid kit, relevant emergency services contact information and important documents.

Stay informed and follow regulations - comply with local regulations regarding fire safety, land management and burning permits while monitoring local conditions.

Sources

http://www.bom.gov.au

https://www.statista.com

https://www.theguardian.com
", "created_at": "2023-10-13 10:40:01 +0800", "excerpt": "

Many people call all skid steers bobcats even though it's just a brand name for skid steers! It may help by telling you that it's just a bobcat.

But if that still doesn't help, a skid steer is a machine often used in landscaping, construction, and agriculture for digging. They're light and small, making them easy to manoeuvre, but only when travelling forwards and backwards. It can be a little trickier when attempting to turn, and this is how they got their name.

The only way to turn a skid steer is to increase speed on a single side which makes the wheels or tracks on that side skid and turn the machine, hence skid steer.

Can a Skid Steer go down slopes?

Simply put… preferably no.

But if necessary, yes.

How steep can a Skid Steer go down a slope?

Great question. The safe answer is to check your operator's manual. But if we want to generalise, it's typically limited to 30 degrees or a little steeper than a 2:1 slope.

Any tips if it does have to go down a slope?

If you do need to manoeuvre your skid steer down a slope of no more than 30 degrees, then there are a few things you should note beforehand.

Keep the heavy end pointed uphill

If the bucket is empty, then this is the back of the machine, but if the bucket is full, this is the front of the machine.

Don't go too fast

Speed is important to control the movement of the machine, so stick to a safe pace for the conditions and try to keep it smooth, avoiding any sudden jerks

Attachments

Consider whether the slope is manageable depending on the attachment. Different attachments impact the machine's centre of gravity and manoeuvrability

Experience

Pretty simple, but have the operator most experienced with the machine take over as they'll understand the unique quirks of the machine itself and its capabilities

One final point… be sure to do a safety check on the machine before completing any risky movement for both the safety of the operator and the machine as you don't want to do any unnecessary damage to it due to a little wear and tear issue that wasn't picked up!", "created_at": "2022-10-25 10:30:53 +0800", "excerpt": "If you do need to manoeuvre your skid steer down a slope of no more than 30 degrees, then there are a few things you should note beforehand.", "excerpt_or_content": "If you do need to manoeuvre your skid steer down a slope of no more than 30 degrees, then there are a few things you should note beforehand.", "handle": "the-himac-herald/how-steep-can-a-skid-steer-go", "id": "559312470198", "image": { "alt": "How Steep Can a Skid Steer Go?", "src": "//himac.com.au/cdn/shop/articles/himac-attachments-blog-how-steep-can-a-skid-steer-go_1x1.jpg?v=1666669224" }, "moderated": "", "published_at": "2022-09-28 10:30:00 +0800", "tags": [ "construction equipment", "earthmoving equipment", "operation", "safety", "skid steer" ], "title": "How Steep Can a Skid Steer Go?", "url": "/blogs/the-himac-herald/how-steep-can-a-skid-steer-go", "user": "UserDrop" }, { "author": "Simon Blackburn", "comments": "", "comments_count": "0", "comments_enabled": "", "comment_post_url": "/blogs/the-himac-herald/what-is-the-difference-between-a-wheel-loader-and-a-front-end-loader/comments", "content": "
What is a Wheel Loader?

Let's start with the basics. A wheel loader is a strong piece of heavy equipment that you might find in agricultural settings or on construction sites. Their typical use is for scooping material ad transporting it from A to B. However, they're very versatile and can be utilised for a wide range of jobs.

Sizes of Wheel Loaders?

Depending on what you need it for you can find 3 size ranges of wheel loaders:

1) Small/compact

2) Mid-sized

3) Large

Wheel loaders can be viewed as the bigger cousin of skid steers, so they're ideal for big jobs!

Types of Wheel Loaders

There are actually two groupings of wheel loaders; light and heavy loaders. Not to state the obvious, but the light loaders are smaller, and best for lighter materials and tighter spaces. Whereas heavy loaders have more capacity for heavier material and are great for a big job to increase productivity.

So then, what is a Front End Loader?

Well, Wheel loaders go by a range of different names, including scoop loaders, skip loaders and bucket loaders, and front-end loader is simply just another!

What about a Wheel Loader and Bulldozer?

To confuse you even more, a wheel loader and bulldozer look very similar; the difference is a wheel loader (this may seem obvious) has wheels rather than a track system. And typically, wheel loaders scoop and dump material and bulldozers push material.
", "created_at": "2022-10-25 08:44:39 +0800", "excerpt": "They're both types of heavy equipment, but which one is which? If you’ve ever done a road trip to country Australia I’m sure you’ve driven on a dirt road or two. These roads are graded to ensure a level and safe driving surface.

However, you may need to grade certain areas on the farm for machinery to come in or alike, meaning a grader (the large scale grading machines) are just not necessary or within the budget. This is where a skid steer comes in handy as all you’ll need is an attachment that can be used for grading!

Ok what should I use to grade with a Skid Steer?

For a basic grade, you can simply use a quality bucket as the front will move the material and the back will smooth. But in saying this, there are a range of attachments that suit skid steers that are specifically designed for skid steers!

Dozer Blade - built to handle hardpack materials with hydraulic angle and tilt functionality.

Grader Blade - the ultimate advanced version of a dozer blade, with electro-hydraulic tilt, angle and height adjust from the cab.

Ripper and Level Bar - if you don't need to invest to the level of a dedicated blade, a two-stage process of using a Ripper (ripping up soil, rocks and other difficult material) and Level Bar (levelling uneven ground) could do the trick.

So, how do I choose an Attachment?

So we’ve given you a few different options, now to choose what’s best for you…

First things first, talk to our team and other operators to get some real reviews and advice on what’s best for your area. A lot of the decision comes down to the ground in which you’re grading and that’s specific to your area.

Finally, check what attachments are actually compatible with your skid steer. Ensure you have the appropriate operating capacity for the attachment you want.

Sources

https://www.westrac.com.au/blog/the-eight-best-skid-steer-attachments-and-their-uses#:~:text=box%20blade%20%2F%20smart%20grader%20blade,sand%20and%20other%20base%20materials

https://skidsteersdirect.com/blogs/news/best-skid-steer-attachments-for-grading-how-to-grade-with-a-bucket

https://www.forconstructionpros.com/equipment/attachments/dozer-blade-attachments/article/21194474/skid-steers-and-compact-track-loaders-prove-costeffective-finish-grade-alternatives
", "created_at": "2022-10-24 15:11:13 +0800", "excerpt": "
