When you think of farm fire preparedness, agricultural machinery attachments might not be the first thing that comes to mind. But actually, these kinds of cutting-edge attachments, often crafted from robust materials, serve as a transformative shield against potential fire outbreaks.

Our attachments are designed not only to enhance agricultural productivity but also for their latent capacity to thwart fire threats. They can assist you in strategically clearing away overgrown vegetation, undergrowth, dead trees, and other combustible materials. After land clearing you will then be left with firebreaks that act as natural barriers that curb the spread of flames and create crucial manoeuvring spaces needed during emergencies.

This practise not only minimises the chances of fire ignition but also fosters healthier ecosystems by promoting the growth of fire-resistant plant species and reducing the competition for limited resources among vegetation.

Before we list the variety of Himac attachments that can be used as part of your rural fire safety measures, we must first address some of the effective ways you can prepare your property for the upcoming fire season.

Suggested fire mitigation strategies

Assess the risk to your property based on its proximity to flammable materials.

Determine the Fire Danger Rating from CFA resources to understand the wildfire severity.

Create a defensible space by clearing flammable vegetation, and maintaining a 20 metre clearance.

Regularly maintain roofs and gutters to prevent debris buildup and ember ignition.

Use fire-resistant landscaping techniques such as selecting fire-resistant plants, non-flammable mulch and maintaining adequate tree spacing.

Install fire-resistant screens on doors, and windows, seal gaps and use barriers.

Ensure that there is access to a water source and equip your property with long hoses.

Prepare an emergency kit with supplies, and develop an evacuation plan and a communication strategy.

Stay informed and up to date through local fire authority updates and emergency broadcasts.

Helpful attachments and how theyʼll help you mitigate fire risk

Slashers - For the fast and efficient removal of dense bush, scrub, grass and small trees.

Rippers - The best attachment to use when creating fire breaks and when it comes to earth preparation prior to landscaping and earthworks.

Push Rakes - Ideal for clearing excess growth, bushes, fence lined and fallen branches.

Brush Grapples - Designed to assist with the grappling and removing of logs, branches, bushes and other kinds of natural growth.

Claw Grapples - Similar to the Brush Grapple but with a Push Rake style functionality. Many people call all skid steers bobcats even though it's just a brand name for skid steers! It may help by telling you that it's just a bobcat.

But if that still doesn't help, a skid steer is a machine often used in landscaping, construction, and agriculture for digging. They're light and small, making them easy to manoeuvre, but only when travelling forwards and backwards. It can be a little trickier when attempting to turn, and this is how they got their name.

The only way to turn a skid steer is to increase speed on a single side which makes the wheels or tracks on that side skid and turn the machine, hence skid steer.

Can a Skid Steer go down slopes?

Simply put… preferably no.

But if necessary, yes.

How steep can a Skid Steer go down a slope?

Great question. The safe answer is to check your operator's manual. But if we want to generalise, it's typically limited to 30 degrees or a little steeper than a 2:1 slope.

Any tips if it does have to go down a slope?

If you do need to manoeuvre your skid steer down a slope of no more than 30 degrees, then there are a few things you should note beforehand.

Keep the heavy end pointed uphill

If the bucket is empty, then this is the back of the machine, but if the bucket is full, this is the front of the machine.

Don't go too fast

Speed is important to control the movement of the machine, so stick to a safe pace for the conditions and try to keep it smooth, avoiding any sudden jerks

Attachments

Consider whether the slope is manageable depending on the attachment. Different attachments impact the machine's centre of gravity and manoeuvrability

Experience

Pretty simple, but have the operator most experienced with the machine take over as they'll understand the unique quirks of the machine itself and its capabilities

One final point… be sure to do a safety check on the machine before completing any risky movement for both the safety of the operator and the machine as you don't want to do any unnecessary damage to it due to a little wear and tear issue that wasn't picked up!", "created_at": "2022-10-25 10:30:53 +0800", "excerpt": "If you do need to manoeuvre your skid steer down a slope of no more than 30 degrees, then there are a few things you should note beforehand.", "excerpt_or_content": "If you do need to manoeuvre your skid steer down a slope of no more than 30 degrees, then there are a few things you should note beforehand.", "handle": "the-himac-herald/how-steep-can-a-skid-steer-go", "id": "559312470198", "image": { "alt": "How Steep Can a Skid Steer Go?", "src": "//himac.com.au/cdn/shop/articles/himac-attachments-blog-how-steep-can-a-skid-steer-go_1x1.jpg?v=1666669224" }, "moderated": "", "published_at": "2022-09-28 10:30:00 +0800", "tags": [ "construction equipment", "earthmoving equipment", "operation", "safety", "skid steer" ], "title": "How Steep Can a Skid Steer Go?", "url": "/blogs/the-himac-herald/how-steep-can-a-skid-steer-go", "user": "UserDrop" }, { "author": "Simon Blackburn", "comments": "", "comments_count": "0", "comments_enabled": "", "comment_post_url": "/blogs/the-himac-herald/what-is-the-difference-between-a-wheel-loader-and-a-front-end-loader/comments", "content": "
What is a Wheel Loader?

Let's start with the basics. A wheel loader is a strong piece of heavy equipment that you might find in agricultural settings or on construction sites. Their typical use is for scooping material ad transporting it from A to B. However, they're very versatile and can be utilised for a wide range of jobs.

Sizes of Wheel Loaders?

Depending on what you need it for you can find 3 size ranges of wheel loaders:

1) Small/compact

2) Mid-sized

3) Large

Wheel loaders can be viewed as the bigger cousin of skid steers, so they're ideal for big jobs!

Types of Wheel Loaders

There are actually two groupings of wheel loaders; light and heavy loaders. Not to state the obvious, but the light loaders are smaller, and best for lighter materials and tighter spaces. Whereas heavy loaders have more capacity for heavier material and are great for a big job to increase productivity.

So then, what is a Front End Loader?

Well, Wheel loaders go by a range of different names, including scoop loaders, skip loaders and bucket loaders, and front-end loader is simply just another!

What about a Wheel Loader and Bulldozer?

To confuse you even more, a wheel loader and bulldozer look very similar; the difference is a wheel loader (this may seem obvious) has wheels rather than a track system. And typically, wheel loaders scoop and dump material and bulldozers push material.
", "created_at": "2022-10-25 08:44:39 +0800", "excerpt": "They're both types of heavy equipment, but which one is which? If you’ve ever done a road trip to country Australia I’m sure you’ve driven on a dirt road or two. These roads are graded to ensure a level and safe driving surface.

However, you may need to grade certain areas on the farm for machinery to come in or alike, meaning a grader (the large scale grading machines) are just not necessary or within the budget. This is where a skid steer comes in handy as all you’ll need is an attachment that can be used for grading!

Ok what should I use to grade with a Skid Steer?

For a basic grade, you can simply use a quality bucket as the front will move the material and the back will smooth. The hydraulic machine is incredibly helpful as it boasts a crane's lifting ability and the load capabilities of a forklift. Alongside this, telehandlers can utilise an array of attachments, increasing their versatility and capabilities for different jobs.

Are there different types of Telehandlers?

Within Australia, you’re likely to find two main types of telehandlers… Rotating telehandlers and fixed boom telehandlers. Rotating telehandlers, as in the name, can rotate 360 degrees, including the cab and boom. The machine's body stays stationary, but this rotation allows for a wide range of movement, particularly in tight spots!

If you’re looking for a heavy lifting machine, however, rotating telehandlers would not be your first choice. Their load and lifting abilities are still something to be noticed, but not when compared to fixed boom telehandlers.

Fixed boom telehandlers are the classic telehandler setup. The cab is fixed with a telescopic boom that points forward. In comparison to rotating telehandlers, fixed booms have much less movement ability. However, this benefits the fixed boom telehandlers as counterweights can be utilised to increase lifting capabilities for heavy loads.

What’s the best Telehandler for the farm?

Let’s lay out some considerations you need to think about when purchasing a telehandler for your farm…

Firstly, are you considering a new or used telehandler? If you’re looking at new machines, you’ll get the benefit of up-to-date tech and features. Whereas used models will typically be at a lower price but may need a bit of inspection to ensure the machines still got enough life in it. The main thing you want to consider is if you need all the new, exciting, and pricey features.

From there, consider what attachments you’ll likely want to use with your telehandler. Most telehandlers have the ability to pair with a range of attachments, but there’s no harm in double checking that the machine you’re looking at has the capability for the attachment you need.

Furthermore, what capacity do you require? There’s no need to get a machine with a crazy high capacity when you never need it. Think long-term about the machine and what jobs you’ll need it for. Alongside this, consider what type you need for these jobs. Do you require a rotating telehandler to get into tight spots, or will a fixed boom be better for those heavy loads you need to transport?

Lastly, consider serviceability, dealer support, parts availability, and warranties. This is particularly true when purchasing a new telehandler as customer service, availability of parts, and a warranty can be a deal breaker!

Let’s be honest; telehandlers are such jack-of-all-trades you can’t go too wrong with whatever you get your hands on!

Sources

https://www.hi-rangecraneforks.com.au/blog/popular-telehandler-types-and-their-benefits

https://www.bobcatofyork.com/blog/telehandler-buying-guide--22320
", "created_at": "2022-10-24 15:29:19 +0800", "excerpt": "Let’s lay out some considerations to think about when purchasing a telehandler for your farm. With different types to choose from, it's smart to make an informed choice.", "excerpt_or_content": "Let’s lay out some considerations to think about when purchasing a telehandler for your farm. With different types to choose from, it's smart to make an informed choice.", "handle": "the-himac-herald/what-s-the-best-telehandler-for-farm-use", "id": "559305982134", "image": { "alt": "What’s the Best Telehandler for Farm Use?", "src": "//himac.com.au/cdn/shop/articles/himac-attachments-blog-best-telehandler-for-farm-use_1x1.jpg?v=1666920054" }, "moderated": "", "published_at": "2022-07-27 15:30:00 +0800", "tags": [ "agriculture", "farming", "farming equipment", "telehandlers" ], "title": "What’s the Best Telehandler for Farm Use?", "url": "/blogs/the-himac-herald/what-s-the-best-telehandler-for-farm-use", "user": "UserDrop" }, { "author": "Simon Blackburn", "comments": "", "comments_count": "0", "comments_enabled": "", "comment_post_url": "/blogs/the-himac-herald/what-is-the-life-expectancy-of-a-skid-steer/comments", "content": "
If you’re looking for a short answer, some say a skid steer should last, on average, around 5,000 hours. The same is true here. If you can avoid pushing it to the limit in the first few years of life, you’ll be able to extend the life of your skid steer.

Regarding maintenance, this one should be relatively obvious. The better you take care of it, the longer it’s going to take care of you!

So… how can I extend the life of my Skid Steer?

The first and potentially most important factor in improving your skid steers life is maintenance. Commit to a schedule of services, complete daily checks to ensure there’s no wear and tear damaging the machine and adjust elements to the season and job. This includes checking wheels and tracks, fluid levels, cooling systems, and oils.

Another element is operation. Ensure the operator of your skid steer, whether that be yourself or an employee, is trained and knows what to do in every situation. This includes how to take care of the machine in winter, how to warm up and cool down the machine properly, and what attachment is appropriate for the job and skid steer, amongst so much more! A well-trained and experienced operator will be able to maintain the machine at an optimal working condition so that no further damage is caused.

Don’t over-think it. A skid steer is a piece of machinery often used in landscaping, construction and agriculture for a wide range of jobs. They are light and small, making them easy to manoeuvre except when trying to turn. Their name originates from their difficulty in turning as the only way it can is to increase speed on one side so the wheels or tracks skid and turn the machine, hence the name skid steer!

Many ask… is a skid steer and a bobcat the same thing? A bobcat is actually just a brand of skid steers, so yes!

What does a Skid Steer cost upfront?

This entirely depends on the size, specs and features of the skid steer you're looking at, but on average, they can be priced from $25,000 to $65,000 new. Second-hand skid steers average around $5,000 to $30,000. Considering these large ranges, it's important to do your research and get the right skid steer for you at a reasonable price.

What does a Skid Steer cost in the long run?

Whilst we can list all that goes into owning a skid steer, many variables will impact ownership costs, so we always encourage you to get professional advice before purchasing to ensure your budget is set and ready to go! Particularly if you're a small contractor or new to the industry, it can be very difficult to gauge your equipment's owning and operating costs.

The important elements to consider are:

Interest rates

Labour costs

Fuel costs

Maintenance costs; which depend on:

The machine chosen

The application and usage of the machine

How long do you intend to keep the machine?

If you take good care of the machine and minimise wear and tear as much as possible, some owners can sell their machines and receive 70% of their original price! This may be a little optimistic, but there is something to say for a machine that has been maintained and cared for.

How to minimise Skid Steer operating costs?

These tips may seem pretty self-explanatory, but they are important in keeping operating costs down and increasing the life span of your machinery.

Routine maintenance and clean and daily checks

This means creating a routine of when you will perform regular maintenance on your machine and sticking to it!

A simple daily walk around of your machine is essential to ensure everything is safe and in working order so that if there are any issues, they won't cause any further damage (don't forget about the undercarriage).

Don't forget to clean the machine regularly so dirt and grime don't build up and impact your machine and so you can actually see if there's any damage.

Tire checks

It is important to check the tread, pressure, rims, and overall condition of your tires (or tracks) weekly to ensure there is no damage, as this can cause serious issues down the line if not fixed quickly.

Drive to the conditions

Be sure you are confident in managing slopes, rugged terrain, and challenging temperatures. A well-trained operator will be able to keep operating costs down simply by driving these conditions well!

Counter-rotating turns are essential in this, and if you can make your turns without counter-rotating, it will reduce the wear and tear on the undercarriage.

Counterweights, filters and lubricants

When counterweights are not needed, take them off! Don't cause unnecessary and excessive wear.

Speak to the manufacturer and utilise filters and lubricants as directed.

In summary, regardless of the machine you purchase, taking good care of it will extend its lifetime and value as well as reduce its overall costs in the long run.

References

https://www.kompareit.com/business/constuction-equipment-skid-steer-compare-bobcat-cost.html

https://www.totallandscapecare.com/business/article/15036361/how-to-calculate-skid-steer-owning-operating-costs

https://info.texasfinaldrive.com/shop-talk-blog/18-tips-to-help-minimize-operating-costs-for-skid-steers

https://www.equipmentworld.com/equipment/article/15065388/determining-skid-steer-owning-operator-costs#:~:text=Such%20variables%20include%20machine%20options,your%20skid%20steer%20O%26O%20costs
", "created_at": "2022-10-24 12:18:37 +0800", "excerpt": "Whilst we can list all that goes into owning a skid steer, many variables will impact ownership costs. The machine is very versatile but is typically utilised to scoop material (soil, dirt, gravel, pallets, and more) for transport into trucks or around the job site. Like most machines, they come in small/compact, mid-sized and large. Overall, wheel loaders are larger and more powerful than skid steers, so they are perfect for big jobs.

Picture a bulldozer with a tractor-like cab, wheels and a very large bucket, and you’ve got a wheel loader!

Is a Wheel Loader the same as a Bulldozer or Front Loader?

Wheel loaders go by many different names, including skip loaders, bucket loaders and scoop loaders; front loader is simply just another!

Furthermore, a wheel loader and bulldozer look very similar; however, a wheel loader (this may seem obvious) has wheels rather than a track system. Another stereotypical difference is that a wheel loader scoops and dumps material with its bucket (we will discuss this later on). In contrast, a bulldozer with push material uses a flat blade.

What do you use a Wheel Loader for?

Typical jobs that require a wheel loader are building roads, cleaning up, and preparing job sites. The most common environment you’ll find a wheel loader is on a construction site or excavation job. However, they are used in landscaping and agricultural projects.

The main role of the wheel loader is to haul, carry, dig, and transport. However, different size wheel loaders have different specialities. A small or compact loader (bucket size of 1 yard) is best for landscaping as the bucket can also become a fork, rake or stump grinder and is compact enough to fit in tighter spaces. A mid-sized loader (bucket size 3 to 5 yards) is best on construction sites for moving heavy materials. Lastly, a large loader (bucket size 7 to 8 yards) is best for heavy-duty projects such as loading gravel onto trucks.

The versatility of wheel loaders means it can be challenging to decide what you truly need for the job at hand, particularly when also considering other machinery such as skid steers. The primary consideration when purchasing or renting a wheel loader is the bucket size, as this will impact how much it can lift and move and how much space it requires on-site. However, it is important to note that wheel loaders are not limited to buckets.

What Attachments can a Wheel Loader use?

Wheel loaders can also utilise a variety of attachments to suit the job at hand, such as:

Rakes

Forks

Grapples

Auger Drives

Concrete Mixers

And more…

Sources

https://dozr.com/blog/wheel-loader

https://www.volvoce.com/asia/en-as/about-us/blog/2021/everything-you-need-to-know-about-wheel-loaders/
", "created_at": "2022-10-24 10:37:41 +0800", "excerpt": "The most common environment you’ll find a wheel loader is on a construction site or excavation job.
